3rd and Welker Intersection 2021 3rd & Welker Intersection Project

The 3rd Street and Welker Avenue intersection project is progressing through property acquisition. Intersection improvements include left and right turn lanes on all legs, medians, sidewalk connections on all legs, drainage upgrades, two railroad crossings, and a traffic signal. Reconstruction of the intersection will begin in 2024, and significant traffic impacts are expected during the construction period. The intersection contains two primary arterial roads in the heart of downtown and is a crucial component of safe routes to school.

October 2023--The Town is nearing completion of the construction documents and will be going out to bid for a general contractor in February 2024. We expect to start construction in the summer of 2024. The final design features an 11,000+ square foot building with a full-sized cross-court gymnasium, multipurpose/programming room, storage rooms, lobby/reception, staff offices, and restrooms.

The Gold Star Families Memorial was created by Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel “Woody" Williams to remember those families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Once that monument was complete, a new mission became clear to Woody and those at the Woody Williams Foundation to establish these monuments in as many communities as possible in all 50 states and U.S. territories. Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments are a two-sided tribute made of black granite.

Street Improvement Fund photo Street Improvement Fund: the 1% sales & use tax at work

The Street Improvement Fund was established to collect the additional 1% sales and use tax approved by voters in November 2021. This fund can only be used to maintain and improve Mead's roadways. The 1% sales and use tax is collected annually and may be applied to the subsequent fiscal year. Ex: 1% sales and use tax collected in 2022 will be allocated in the 2023 Street Improvement Fund budget.
