Trustees urge voters to approve sales & use tax

BOT

October 13, 2021--On October 11, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to pass a resolution supporting the 1% sales and use tax increase to fund street maintenance.  If Ballot Issue 2D is passed by voters on November 2, the Town’s sales and use tax would increase from 2% to 3%. All new revenue generated would be retained in a segregated account, dedicated exclusively to street maintenance, and will not go into the general fund.

The Board previously identified the need for additional revenue based on the 2020 Pavement Condition Assessment Report. Mead’s Pavement Condition Index (PCI) is 67 or “fair”, but if Mead continues spending at the current budgeted amounts, roads will deteriorate to a PCI rating of 57 in five years and 47 in ten years. The town currently spends $375,000 annually to maintain 50 miles of road. Based on the 2020 Pavement Condition Assessment, the town needs an additional $1.4M annually to keep streets in “fair” condition.

The Resolution expresses the Board’s support for the passage of the 1% sales and use tax increase; urging all registered electors of the Town to vote “YES” on Ballot Issue 2D at the November 2, 2021, election.
